4. Tactics against Various Rubberers (Service)

4.3. The Course and Strength of Service

Can you properly use long and short services?

As already mentioned in Section 1.9 Relation swing and ball , in order to control the flight distance of the ball, the force component Fφ in the tangential direction of the racket swing is proportional to the swing radius. So it was rational to adjust by the radius. The radius of swing in this case refers to the XY plane, that is, the radius projected on the table.

The swing radius can be set by standing the racket or the elbow, or also rotating it around the midpoint between the wrist and arm joints.

Here, let's look at an example corresponding to the typical flight distance delivered during service.

Origin O is the right corner of the table.
Opponent's backside N point corresponds to the long side of the table. When the swing radius is rn = 1.0 and the force in the tangential direction is Fn = 1.0, the distance between the origin and the N point is set as the reference flight distance of the ball = 1.0.

  1. To aim at the S point in front of the opponent's racket back side, swing with a swing radius of rs = 0.6, the force in the tangential direction is Fs = 0.6, and the flight distance is 0.6.
  2. To aim at the T point in front of the opponent's fore, swing with a swing radius of rt = 0.75, the force in the tangential direction is Ft = 0.75, and the flight distance is 0.75.
  3. To aim at point M deep in the opponent's fore side sideline, swing with a swing radius of rm = 0.9, and the tangential force Fm = 0.9, and the flight distance is 0.9.
  4. To aim at the L point deeply on the fore side of the opponent, swing with a swing radius of rl = 1.1, the force in the tangential direction Fl = 1.1, and the flight distance is 1.1.

important point

The flight distance of the ball is adjusted by the radius of the swing in the flight direction of the ball, but for the spin of the ball, in order to give the same spin speed to both the long ball and the short ball, the direction of the swing to rub, that is, the flight direction. The swing radius in the direction perpendicular to the above must be the same.

Also, when throwing a short ball, if the hitting point is too high, the flight distance will be long, so the height from the table should be about the net height.
